The North Shore Chorale is an auditioned, mixed voice choir, under the musical direction of Nicholas Forbes. We love the challenge of singing a range of music from classical to light music. There are currently about 50 members and the choir welcomes inquiries from new singers – particularly men!

We rehearse on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.45pm at St George’s Presbyterian Church Hall, 2 The Terrace, Takapuna, Auckland. Please contact our Membership Convenor, Dene Simpson, if you would like to visit a rehearsal with a view to joining the Chorale.

Save the date! We are excited to join with the Auckland Youth Choir for our final concert of 2018, A Christmas Fantasia – Friday 30 November, 7.30pm at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Takapuna. Don’t miss it!

A note from the Musical Director

Nicholas Forbes, Musical Director

It’s my great pleasure to be writing to you as the Musical Director of the North Shore Chorale and we warmly welcome you all to our exciting 2018 season. Our first concert celebrated 100 years since the birth of the great American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, with some of his favourite works, including selections from West Side Story and Chichester Psalms. Later this year, we will be joining the Auckland Symphony Orchestra and the Graduate Choir to perform Chris Artley’s work “Missa Brevis” in the Auckland Town Hall, and will finish the year with a Christmas concert in conjunction with the Auckland Youth Choir, presenting Britten’s wonderful cantata St. Nicolas.

As a choral conductor, I have been greatly influenced by my background as both a cathedral chorister in Christchurch and my membership of the New Zealand Youth Choir. I have been very privileged to have studied with Dr. Karen Grylls at Auckland University, which has given me a great belief in the power of the human voice as a musical instrument and the importance of striving together to improve the vocal and musical skills of each individual choir member. Choirs can build warm and supportive communities together through song.

One of my primary goals for the North Shore Chorale is to maintain and develop our presence in the North Shore community, through continued participation in community events such as the annual ANZAC Day service in Takapuna and building relationships with community organisations including hospitals and rest homes. I would like to work with the committee to raise the choir’s profile in the wider Auckland area, fundraising to be able to realise more ambitious projects such as large-scale orchestral concerts, attracting prominent soloists and touring.

Thank you for your continuing support and we hope that you enjoy our 2018 concert season!
